Screenshot your homepage, your last email, a social post, a support reply, and a sales message. Strip the logo off each one. Now ask yourself if a stranger could tell they came from the same company. Most brands can't answer yes, and they don't find out until a customer notices first.
That's the whole point of a voice audit: catch the drift before someone else does. This one takes five minutes, five rounds, no tools required.
Run the Brand Voice Audit: Five Quick Rounds
Grab your phone, set a timer, and go looking for patterns, not perfection.
Round 1: The Screenshot Test (90 seconds)
Pull five pieces of content: homepage, recent email, social post, support response, sales message. Remove the logo from each. Line them up.
Ask: could you tell these came from the same company?
- Yes, clearly. Your voice is consistent.
- Maybe, if I squinted. You've got voice drift.
- No way. You're in voice chaos.
Round 2: The Stranger Test (60 seconds)
Show the same five screenshots to someone outside your company (or paste them into ChatGPT and ask it to play the stranger). Ask: "Based on these, describe this company's personality in three words."
- Same three words across all five: strong voice.
- Three different sets: voice confusion.
- Can't describe it: no voice at all.
Round 3: The Voice Charter Test (60 seconds)
Describe your brand voice in 25 words or less, right now, no looking anything up. Time yourself.
- Done in 25 words: you have clarity.
- Took more than 25: you need to distill.
- Couldn't finish: you need definition, full stop.
Round 4: The Team Alignment Test (60 seconds)
Message three people on three different teams (marketing, sales, support): "In three adjectives, how would you describe our brand voice?" No time to confer, no looking anything up. Gut reactions only.
- All three match: team alignment.
- Two match, one different: partial alignment.
- All three different: no shared understanding, and that's the real problem to fix.
Round 5: The AI Test (60 seconds)
Open ChatGPT and paste this:
"Based on this [paste your homepage copy], write a follow-up email to someone who just signed up."
Read what comes back.
- Sounds like you, surprisingly close: your voice is learnable as-is.
- Close but needs heavy editing: your voice needs more structure before AI can run with it.
- Not even close: your voice is too vague for anyone, human or AI, to replicate.
Score the Audit
Count your strong results across the five rounds.
5/5: Your voice is dialed in. Move on to formalizing it for AI: a Brand Voice JSON so every tool and teammate pulls from the same source.
3-4/5: You've got a foundation but gaps in consistency or documentation. Pin down exactly where the gaps are before you build anything new.
1-2/5: Voice exists in pockets but isn't intentional. Start with the Voice Charter Template and get one sentence right before touching anything else.
0/5: You're starting from scratch, and that's not a bad place to be. No bad habits to unlearn. Same next step: the Voice Charter Template.
Turn Your Score Into a Plan
Whatever you scored, don't stop at diagnosis. Pick the weakest round and act on it this week:
- Failed the Screenshot or Stranger Test? You have a consistency problem. Read the Cohesion framework for how to lock tone across channels.
- Failed the Voice Charter Test? You have a definition problem. The Voice Charter Template walks you through writing the one sentence that anchors everything else.
- Failed the Team Alignment Test? You have a communication problem. Share your charter with every team lead and ask them to point to the specific line that governs their channel.
- Failed the AI Test? You have a structure problem. Loose adjectives aren't enough for AI to replicate. You need rules AI can actually follow.
Make It a Habit, Not a One-Off
Set a recurring reminder: "Voice Audit," once a month. Run the same five rounds and track whether your score moves. Voice consistency isn't a project with an end date. It's a habit you either keep or lose.
