Open five coaching Instagram accounts in your niche right now. Read the captions without the profile pictures attached. Could you tell them apart? Most coaches can't tell theirs apart from the other four either, and that's the actual problem, not your offer, not your niche, not your posting frequency.
You didn't get into coaching to sound like a template. But between borrowed hooks, swipe files, and ChatGPT drafts built on "write like a confident, empowering coach," a whole industry has converged on the same six phrases: show up as your best self, unlock your potential, the version of you that's waiting. It's not that any one line is bad. It's that ten thousand people are saying it, and none of them sound like a person you'd recognize in a room.
Why coaches specifically hit this wall
Coaching sells a relationship before it sells a framework. People hire you because of how working with you feels, which means your voice isn't decoration on top of the offer, it basically is the offer, in written form, before anyone books a call. When your voice is generic, prospects can't tell what it's like to work with you specifically, so they default to comparing price and credentials, which is a fight most coaches lose against someone with a bigger following.
There's also a volume problem unique to solo coaches. You're writing captions, emails, a sales page, DMs, maybe a podcast script, mostly alone, often fast, often with AI doing the first pass. Every one of those needs the same voice behind it, and without a system, each piece drifts a little further from the last, and further from what actually made your first clients say yes.
What "sounding like you" actually requires
Not more content. Not a bigger hook library. Three specific things, in order:
A Voice Charter that names your actual personality, not a coaching-industry adjective. "Warm and empowering" describes half the coaches on the internet. "The coach who asks the question you've been avoiding, direct, warm, zero corporate speak" describes one coach. The second version is 25 words or fewer, written the way you'd say it out loud, and it's specific enough that a competitor literally could not claim it as their own.
A defined "never" list. What do you refuse to sound like? Hustle-culture pressure? Spiritual-bypass positivity? Corporate LinkedIn polish? Naming what you're not does more to sharpen your voice than another round of "what are my values" journaling. It's also the single most useful line to paste into ChatGPT, because it rules out the generic middle ground the model defaults to.
A structured reference you paste into every AI prompt. If you're using ChatGPT or Claude to draft captions, emails, or your sales page (most coaches are, and there's no reason to pretend otherwise), the quality of the output is a direct function of what you paste in first. A vague "sound like a coach" prompt gets a vague coach voice back. Your actual Voice Charter, tone words, and two or three example lines pasted at the top of the chat gets your voice back.
The fastest fix: rewrite one piece of content two ways
Take a caption you've already published, one that felt fine but not distinctly you. Rewrite it twice: once using only adjectives ("warm, confident, encouraging"), once pasting three real examples of your best writing above the prompt and asking the model to match that pattern. Read both out loud. The second one will sound like a person. The first will sound like a category. That gap is exactly what's costing you right now, multiplied across every piece of content you've published this year.
Where to start if you're doing this solo
You don't need a content calendar overhaul or a rebrand. You need the voice defined once, correctly, in a form you can reuse in every prompt and every platform from here forward. That's the whole point of a Voice Charter, a Tone & Mood Matrix, and a Brand Voice JSON built specifically around how you already talk, not how coaches are "supposed to" sound.
The free voice check is a fast way to see exactly where your current voice is generic versus specific, in about three minutes, no signup wall to see your results.
The Solo Voice Sprint
For coaches ready to fix this properly and move on, the Solo Voice Sprint is a focused, one-person engagement: your Voice Charter, Tone & Mood Matrix, and Brand Voice JSON built out from your actual writing and your actual clients, plus the prompt templates to carry that voice across captions, emails, and your sales page consistently. It's $1,250, built for one person, one voice, done properly instead of half-guessed in a Notion doc.
If you're not ready to commit yet, the Voice Charter Template is free and gets you most of the way to the first, most important piece on your own.
You already have a voice. It's in your DMs, your client calls, the way you actually talk when you're not trying to sound like a coach. The work is capturing it once, properly, so every future caption starts from there instead of from a swipe file everyone else is using too.
